I Love This Game

Dress from Saudi, Mr Price glitter gladiators, Pierre Cardin leather envelope clutch, earrings from India

The game I’m talking about is a branch off of playing ‘Dress Up’ but when I travel I extend it to the people/place I am visiting. In other words, I try to be a fantastic version of the locals, or use the country’s culture as an outfit “theme” (you may remember it from my Rome post). After being in Doha for two months now, I hadn’t played the ‘Arabia’ dress up game yet, so it was long overdue!

Leonor and I went for dinner and some shisha at one of our favourite rooftop restaurants in Souq Waqif. You can’t be too layered in this weather as temperatures at night can still reach up to 40 degrees Celcius. I opted for a caftan style dress I know many Muslims in Cape Town will be able to recognise/relate to: the infamous “Makkah Rokkie” as dubbed by the Malays. Most people back home use it to cook and clean the house because it is so light and comfortable, but when I look at it I can’t imagine something so fantastic being paired with yellow rubber gloves, nor would I be too happy with it being splashed with samoosa oil! I’m lucky this one is such good quality, isn’t sheer and has an amazing print. It works really well in every way for this country and occasion. It could be so great with a pair of espidrills or wooden wedges too.

Also, I went through an an intense phase where I made the most of my long neck by collecting and wearing huge earrings. The bigger the better, nothing you were likely to find at normal stores, but rather international markets and imports. I’m talking Beyonce on steroids. They’re quite heavy on the ears but eventually I got used to it! I’ve had this particular pair for about six years now. I love the detail and texture of the metal, totally worked with my theme! Sleeked back my hair in a big tight bun with the help of a hair donut for a polished look that would keep me cool.

I think I won this game:)
