I had a training day for work in Dubai two weeks ago and bought the 916-page anniversary issue of Vogue to read on the plane back to Doha. I felt my usual fashionably-patriotic pride when flipping through the pages I saw Candice Swanepoel fronting the Oscar de la Renta FW 12/13 campaign.
However, I also recognised the doe-eyed brunette next to her, Katryn Kruger. Not quite at Swanepoel’s calibre, but definitely catching up fast, Kruger quickly is making waves in the international fashion industry, also as the face of Dior eyewear. About a year ago, I was the fashion intern at Marie Claire magazine, and she was the model in the first shoot I assisted on. Only sixteen at the time, I remember the excited talks around the office about how she was request-cast to walk for Prada that coming season. I showed these pages in the magazine to anyone around me in the terminal who would look/listen, brimming with pride at our girls.
